colocación de dos implantes dentales a un mandril en el zoo de jerez.

Dr. Francisco Rábago, along with veterinarians from the Jerez Zoo and Botanical Garden, has performed another operation on a male mandrill primate. This time, they placed two dental implants in each molar to ensure the animal can feed more easily and improve its quality of life.

Intervention with a pioneering technique

The screw and the tooth were placed in one area of the face, and immediate loading was performed in the other, which involves performing the entire procedure in one go. This way, they avoided the primate having to undergo another intervention. First, an examination was performed, which revealed all the anomalies found in the mandrill's teeth. This examination was done with a 3D scanner, an innovative and pioneering technique, which was used to create a virtual library of mouth models of all the species at the Jerez Zoo.

In a second surgery, performed in March of last year, two premolars were removed, an implant was placed, and a canine tooth was cleaned and reconstructed. In the third, the permanent teeth were placed on both sides of the face.

For their part, the Zoo's veterinary team, made up of Miguel Ángel Quevedo and José María Aguilar, pointed out that "everything went well in the operation and, with it, we have managed to improve the quality of life of this mandrill." They also thanked Dr. Rábago for his collaboration "for his good work and professionalism and, especially, for his always altruistic collaboration with the Zoo."

The collaboration between Francisco Rábago and the Zoobotánico began more than ten years ago, and has allowed, among other actions, the recovery of a hermit ibis, which was fitted with a prosthesis on one leg, following the system of dental implants. For Dr. Rábago, it is a real satisfaction to collaborate with this type of intervention given the passion he feels for animals.
